scene from Wilde-Oscar meets Bosie
Things to notice: First, observe the overall aesthetic.
Light quality: Warm
Colors: Tungsten (oranges, indoor)
Motivated Lights
Costume: The fabrics are sensuous. How do we know? The way the light hits and makes shadows. The contrast between light and shadow creates texture.
Blocking: Notice the traffic, motion vectors, and the placement of the main characters in each framing. The camera is generally eye level with you as a person in the room's point of view
Motion/Sound: Notice how the sound production was accomplished for the moment Oscar sees Bosie. This is highly sophisticated and one of my favorite "falling in love" moments ever on screen because of its creativity.

A few things caught my attention in this clip. The first being how the background noise seemed to fade out slightly at about 1:02 when Oscar sees Bosie, and again at about 2:26 after Oscar says “how could they be so cruel to one so beautiful?” They background noise is barely there as they share a moment, then goes noticeably back to “normal” at about 2:35 when the others join them. Another observation I made was after Oscar first sees Bosie, not only does the background noise decrease slightly, but the camera zooms in to a close up shot, creating a natural form of suspense without any music accompanying it (which is what most people are used to in current films). Although this is the only scene from this film I have seen, those are some of the things I picked up on.
ReplyDeletevisually the clip is a comfortable way to show whats happening, the surrounding elements play a factor in giving the viewer a sense of familiarity in the event. the lighting was most notable to me as it sets the tone for the entire scene. the suspense of the scene was perfectly placed due to the comfort that the viewer could be placed in based on the surrounding elements in the scene. the low background noise gives the element of suspense rather than suspenseful music and is a more natural and surprising way.
